The Experts: Winter Skincare – Part 1

So, the leaves have turned and the sun-kissed, golden glow of our summer skin is all but a distant memory *sob*. That doesn’t mean we have to settle for dull, dry winter skin though!

We’ve enlisted the help of some of our favourite skincare gurus, to find out exactly what we should be doing to look after our skin this winter. Read on for some complexion-boosting tips and fabulous product recommendations from those in the know.
“Exfoliating your skin before/during winter will allow getting rid of dead skin cells on the surface and help moisturiser to penetrate much better. It also maintains that youthful glow that is so often lost during the winter months. Try 001 Skincare Pure Active Peel a couple of times a week to reduce winter dryness and irritation.

Keep your skin hydrated during winter with 001 Skincare Pure Lavender Hydrolat Toner. It is an anti-inflammatory, fortifying and astringent toner that will help your face feel much more moist and comfortable, working as a protective barrier that restores and protects skin”

“Protect your hands this winter. It’s so easy for the cold air to dry out our hands even when wearing gloves and we all know how painful dry and cracked skin on our knuckles can be! With that being said, if you can stick to doing one thing this winter I highly recommend to keep the skin on your hands hydrated and protected since we use our hands more than any other part of our body on a daily basis. An easy way to do this would be to make sure that you keep your hands hydrated with some kind of a moisturiser. I like to moisturise my hands before I pop my winter gloves on which also gives me that added assurance that my hands aren’t going to dry out as bad or if at all when I am out and about.

One product that I absolutely love for the wintertime is our Beeswax Salve. Ouish Boutique’s Beeswax Salve is made with lots of hydrating oils such as flaxseed and organic beeswax that will keep even the driest skin supple and nourished over the long and cold winter months. This product is also fantastic to take with you on the go and it is perfect for applying to any other parts of your body that might need a little extra love!”

“During the winter months our skin can become much drier and sometimes tight and itchy. A major contributing factor to winter dryness is low humidity, caused by cold winds and overheated homes and offices. To keep skin looking well during the winter months I thoroughly recommended exfoliating as well as moisturising – moisturising well during the winter months is key! Staying inside more and other lifestyle adjustments in the winter can lead to a buildup of dead skin cells through the colder months.

For this reason it’s essential to exfoliate more in order for your skin to take in the moisturising products you’re applying – you want to avoid just moisturising dead skin cells and not the fresh, new skin underneath. Try combining my Natural Glow Cleansing Oil with the Luminous Light Polishing Powder for the most luxurious treatment, and reveal a bright, youthful looking complexion.

In winter, the water in your skin can evaporate or be drawn into your body to support your internal organs, leading to dryness, redness and an uneven texture. Replace your stripping foaming cleanser with the world’s first 100% natural, emulsifying oil cleanser… my Natural Glow Cleansing Oil leaves hydration levels intact and brightens your skin. Follow with a generous application of a toner such as Forest Dew Skin Conditioner to draw in moisture and balance pH levels, and then finish with a serum and moisturiser to lock in the hydration – my Mask Supreme 7-in-1 contains cutting edge oleosome technology which restores moisture to the skin both instantly and over time.

Use a thicker, richer moisturiser, a good night cream and facial oils to keep skin looking tip top all winter long. Also try and use a moisturiser containing SPF and UVA protection -even in winter months the sun can cause your skin to dry out!

And finally drink lots – it sounds obvious, but making sure you’re taking in plenty of fluids is my number one tip for keeping skin hydrated. Throughout winter people often forget to drink enough as they aren’t ‘gasping’ due to the warm weather and the thought of drinking cold water is too much to bear! Drinking herbal tea is a great remedy for this; my favourite is a homemade grated ginger, lemon and cinnamon tea with olive leaves. This combination is awakening, rejuvenating and the addition of olive leaf gives the immune system a boost. Coconut water and raw juices are also great for keeping hydration levels topped up.”
